There’s no doubt that the UK is facing an energy crisis.
Research from 2024 shows that an estimated 13% of households (3.17 million) are struggling with „fuel poverty.” This is a frightening figure, and people are battling rising energy costs in every property they invest in: rental homes, office space, brick-and-mortar shops – prices are rising just to stay afloat.
Energy poverty is forcing more and more real estate companies to seek alternative, more sustainable ways to finance their operations and maintain customer satisfaction.
TITAN Containers is addressing these needs.
TITAN successfully installed solar panel systems in a warehouse in Kolding, Denmark—a sign of what’s possible in countries with a similar climate.
This installation sets a new standard for sustainability in the warehousing industry and demonstrates TITAN’s commitment to providing modern, innovative solutions to customers worldwide.
With over 28 self-storage facilities across the UK , this is a huge step forward for TITAN’s operations.
We now understand what it takes to launch a fully solar-powered warehouse .
This first facility will help the team deploy solar solutions more quickly, efficiently, and effectively across the UK and beyond.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN: THE GROWTH OF SOLAR ENERGY FOR TITAN IN DENMARK
In 2021, the TITAN team set themselves a mission: to create the first 100% solar-powered self-service container depot in Denmark .
It was a huge undertaking, especially considering the amount of space needed to install enough panels to absorb the energy of the Danish sun.
Fortunately, space isn’t something we’re short of, even if Denmark can sometimes lack sunshine.
In September 2022, the team received the keys to the Kolding pit yard in southern Denmark.
It required some attention, but the foundations and space gave us confidence that we had made the right decision.
After several months of hard work and patience, we transformed a previously neglected warehouse into a space that combines utility with sustainability—we couldn’t be more proud.
TOUR OF THE FIRST SOLAR-POWERED STORAGE IN KOLDING (DENMARK)
The Kolding facility boasts a whopping 17,000 square meters of warehouse space .
The warehouse hall measures an impressive 1,800 square meters: 57 rooms were already occupied when we picked up the keys, but we plan to add approximately 60 more rooms to meet demand in Kolding.
There is also a 260 square metre workshop for container repairs and other on-site services.
The outdoor self-storage area covers 4,500 square meters, providing ample storage space as well as all the necessary solar panels.
Here’s an overview:
A ROOF WITH AN 85 kWh SOLAR INSTALLATION ENSURES CONTINUOUS LIGHTING
By replacing the old roof, TITAN created a platform capable of generating clean, renewable energy to power the 1,800-square-meter indoor facility.
We also added a 10-kWh energy storage unit to ensure continuous power for CCTV, lighting, and other critical functions throughout the night, as all our storage spaces are accessible 24/7 via an electric gateway system connected to customers’ smartphones.
This change not only reduces our carbon footprint but also lowers energy costs, benefiting our customers and the environment.
This is a long-term benefit for everyone.
An electric fleet ensuring continuous operation
We’re not stopping at solar technology.
The Kolding depot also offers two electric vehicles to assist with daily operations, an electric loading dock, and two electric forklifts.
All these vehicles help TITAN maintain eco-friendly, sustainable, and affordable warehouse solutions.
SMART LIGHTING FOR 24/7 SOLUTIONS
The team also implemented intelligent lighting throughout the office space.
The lamps are equipped with advanced sensors that adapt to available natural light and emit only the amount of light needed for people to see comfortably.
For example, as daylight fades, sensors gradually increase brightness to provide a well-lit environment while maintaining optimal energy efficiency.
When natural light is stronger, sensors dim artificial lighting.
It adapts to the ambient light, much like a smartphone screen, to ensure the best screen brightness at all times.
Additionally, the interior hall has been divided into six zones, each equipped with motion-sensor-controlled lights.
This dynamic configuration allows customers to navigate the warehouse effortlessly at any time of day without having to manually turn lights on and off, which can be difficult when your hands are full or you’re new to the space!
